Why you should be purging your Instagram followers regularly
You may have heard some marketing experts talk about removing followers.
Most people will block bot accounts, but the savviest ones are removing real people who just don’t fit their ideal client profile (or ICP) as well.
So why are they doing this?
It all comes back to the IG algorithm. Instagram uses your followers and the engagement your content receives to decide who else should see it:
👉 IG starts off by showing your content to most of your followers, some of whom are irrelevant
👉 Your content is only relevant to your ICP, so most followers don’t engage
👉 IG sees that only a small percentage are engaging, so it decides the content is irrelevant to your followers
👉 Fewer of your followers see your content, and it’s not shown to others either
If you feel like you’re stuck in this loop, a follower purge is the easiest way out!
For your big purge, you’ll want to set aside a lot of time, and probably break it up into chunks. You want to go through your ENTIRE follower list and remove the ones that don’t match your ICP. Some people go as far as to block these people, but that’s only necessary for bot accounts.
This is the perfect spring cleaning task for your Instagram account that will help you reach more of your dream clients and find ways to engage with them.
When was the last time you went through your followers? How many of them do you think are actually your ICP?
